My volunteering experience started in June 2008. I went with my church to Biloxi, Mississippi to rebuild houses 2 years after Hurricane Katrina. That week was life changing. I got to go to Mississippi for the first time. I got to spend a week away from my parents for the first time. There were so many firsts on that trip I don't think it is possible to name them all. I was not expecting this trip to change my life the way it did. When I look back on my life, that week was a huge life changing moment.
I took a break from volunteering for a while until I came to Central Michigan University. My first year in college I was in a program called the PSRC (Public Service Residential Community). I lived on 3rd floor in Barnes Hall for a year with others in the PSRC program. For a whole year I volunteered a local places throughout the community. I remember all of the places we volunteered at. Here is a list of some of the places
- The Mobile Food Pantry at CCN (Community Compassion Network)-- This is where we unloaded a truck that was full of food and then we distributed food to families in need from the local community (Mount Pleasant, Michigan)
- Habitat for Humanity Restore-- I spent 2 months volunteering there. I helped organize and clean the store as well as helping customers
- The Mount Pleasant Area Soup Kitchen-- I helped feed and prepare food for the homeless in the area.
- HOME--I went with a church group to go feed the homeless of Detroit.
The summer of 2010 I got an opportunity to volunteer at a nursing home. For my social work major I have to do 100 volunteer hours. I completed 57 of my volunteer hours here. I did various activities with the residents. Some of the things I helped with were bingo, ice cream socials, and happy hour.
As I continue to volunteer through out my year I will try to keep you informed. If anyone has questions about volunteering please message me. I would love to help.
